The forefront of
community
development is more often the
initiatives
that encourage it, and having the
members
themselves participate in the planning and execution of these
programs
can be instrumental to their success. However,
community
-led projects can come at a cost. Thus, this essay will explore the advantages and disadvantages of
community
-
driven
development
initiatives
.
One primary benefit of
community
-
driven
initiatives
is the voice they give individuals to express their opinion. In doing so,
members
may feel appreciated and can, therefore, take their job as a
member
of their
community
seriously. Moreover, having
members
of the
community
lead these
programs
can ensure that its objectives are more people-centered than profit-centered, ensuring that funds are properly allocated and invested.
However, these
programs
also have
its
disadvantages. First,
community
-
driven
programs
have a high possibility of failing without the proper funding from the government or the private sector. Without sufficient support, these projects may never come to fruition. Second, without intentional leadership, these
initiatives
could be belittled by
community
members
and disregarded totally. The possibility of having only a small percentage of the
community
participate is high without the appropriate expertise and motivation.
In conclusion,
programs
that are
driven
by the
community
's
members
can offer many benefits for individuals and for everyone involved as long as the drawbacks are considered. For a
community
-led
initiative
to be successful,
members
must ensure that possible issues relating to funding and supervision are addressed beforehand. Doing so can facilitate the smooth execution of development
programs
and allow all stakeholders to feel the benefits of these
programs
themselves.
