National
cultural is an important feature of a society that distinguishes a country from others. Recently, there has been a rise in the
advertisement of
these practises through government backed events and campaigns in various locations. There are clear advantages to this approach but some disadvantages do need to be addressed to weigh the benefits against the harm.
Firstly, an advantage that comes foremost to mind is the
instillment
of patriotic values into society. By promoting
national
culture, it will educate the younger generation about key practises and beliefs that might otherwise have been lost as time goes by. For the older generation, this will invoke a sense of nostalgia and provide opportunities to connect with youth by reminiscing the past and lessons learnt. Secondly, by encouraging the widespread promotion of
national
culture, tourism will undoubtedly increase bringing with it much needed revenue for the local economy. Foreigners will be intrigued by the rich heritage that a nation has to offer and endeavour to travel there to experience things
firsthand
. An apt example, is the improvement in the tourism economy in Egypt, when the authorities started focusing on improving the infrastructure and amenities for tourists whilst advertising the attractions, mainly the
age old
pyramids and the fascinating mummies.
Some disadvantages could be for the locals. An influx in tourism might make life for the natives cumbersome, as people might not all be considerate, leaving establishments dirty, not respecting the culture and heritage of sites, among other aspects.
Overall, there are slightly more advantages compared to disadvantages
in regards to
this. The inherent appreciation of one's
national
heritage to be passed down to the next generation and the improvement to the economy is grounds enough to validate the use of a country's resources to promote itself.
