Learning
a foreign language
can occur in adulthood or picked up as a child
. Whether it is more
efficiently learned
in childhood compared to as an adult
is where the debate is. I personally believe that languages
are more
easily learned
in childhood than as an adult
.This belief stems from the fact that firstly, at a young age,
children
's brains are constantly developing and absorbing stimuli from the environment at a rapid rate. When learning
something new
, for example a new
word or the pronunciation of a word, the mind is quicker to memorise, internalise and put it into practice. Secondly, from my exprience
, children
find it easier to integrate into a society that speaks a different language
from their original spoken language
. Children
tend to be more
open in accepting new
cultures and habits and will therefore have an easier time interacting with native speakers, hence, practicing
a key component to picking up a foreign language
.Conversely,
adults
would have a harder time learning
a foreign language
as they would have been comfortable conversing, thinking, listening and writing in their native language
. This would pose as an obstacle as adults
would then be taking time to translate words and phrases from their dominant language
before being able to string sentences in a new
one. Whereas for a child
, the sentence might come naturally as they learned
a new
language
alongside learning
their native language
. It is akin to comparing an adult
's mind as a slate that has been written on and has to be rewritten whereas a child
's slate is clean and empty. In conclusion,
children
readily accept new
concepts, are more
able to freely interact with others and their minds develop quickly. Thus, consolidation of a new
language
is easily done at a younger age. I do feel though that endeavouring to learn
a new
language
is a noble pursuit for children
and adults
alike.
