Introduction
In
areas
where
tourism
is prevalent,
waste
-management is a common problem due to surges in
waste
production, potentially causing
waste
management systems to be overwhelmed. To mitigate the amount of
waste
in
tourism
hotspots, the
government
should implement the appropriate policies that are specifically aligned with this objective.
To understand how to reduce
waste
, it is important to know how
tourism
contributes to the problem. First, it is expected for it to be overcrowded in tourist spots
and
therefore, lined with stalls targeting those who visit. As a result, visitors fall victim to these tourist-traps and consequently, feel inclined to purchase unnecessary goods that contribute to additional
waste
. Second, many countries do not have the proper policies in place that discourage tourists and residents alike to avoid disposing their
trash
improperly. Therefore,
trash
quickly piles
up
causing air and water pollution in the
area
.
With these factors in mind, the
government
has the authority to regulate the amount of
waste
that is
produced
especially in
areas
where
tourism
is most active.
Government
units can
fine
those who are caught littering in order to reduce litter and
waste
generation overall. In Singapore, this has been a long-implemented policy
and
it has been effective in maintaining its clean streets and high air quality. However, it is important that this movement be incorporated with recyclable and compostable packaging for basic commodities such as bottled water and packaged food. In doing so,
waste
is mitigated further and burning non-recyclable materials is lessened.
In conclusion,
tourism
should not be an excuse to stop applying proper
waste
prevention and management systems. Instead, this should be a motivator for local
government
units all over the world to preserve their
areas
and welcome visitors into a place that is both clean and comfortable.
