In the contemporary era,
recycling
is widely regarded experts as the most effective method for sustainable
waste
management method and
resource
conservation. Although it offers
multitude
advantages
, such as reduction in pollution through
reuse
of materials and alleviating stress on
natural
resources
, it also has some disadvantages, such as increased water consumption and a higher carbon footprint. This essay will further elaborate on the merits and demerits of
recycling
programs from an environmental perspective.
To begin with,
recycling
programs help to
reduce
landfill pollution through material
reuse
while also decreasing the dependency on
natural
resources
. Humankind produces enormous quantities of
waste
in the form of wood, paper, and plastic; thus, this contributes significantly to environmental problems. Therefore,
resource
recovery and
recycling
help to redirect the materials from landfills to
a better uses
, which helps
reduce
air, land, and water contamination. In addition to this, the extraction of
natural
resources
is
reduced
because
recycling
allows manufacturers to reuse items. For example, instead of cutting down trees for paper, producers can use the recycled paper in their products.
Waste
reuse
programs are a more sustainable option for
waste
management practices.
Despite the advantages, there are some disadvantages associated with
resource
recovery schemes.
Recycling
procedures require a large amount of water and electricity, resulting in increased energy consumption. Like any other manufacturing process , the increased use of energy results in a larger carbon footprint. Moreover, many electronics slated for
recycling
are shipped overseas to less-developed countries, where they are sorted by hand.
During the sorting process, metals and other chemicals may leach into the land and water where the
recycling
is taking place.Hence, many experts believe that it is better focus
reuse
and reduction rather than
recycling
due to elevated use of water supply and electricity.
To conclude, despite it many advantages,
recycling
can lead to environmental degradation if not conducted properly. However, individuals should still should focus on promoting
recycling
schemes, as they can help
reduce
dependency on
natural
materials.
