Thesis Statement
Culture
and
language
have a strong correlation from each others, but not causalities. Despite being some
people
argue about
language
as a prerequisite to
understand
a
culture
, I believe that we
don't
need to
speak
the
language
to
understand
the
culture
.
It's
because
language
and
culture
is
a separated aspect.
To begin with,
country
with the
neighboring
region usually shares a quite similar
culture
, as well as the
language
. But, not all
neigboring
countries
have the same
language
. For example,
countries
in Asia have a
culture
to take off their shoes before entering the house. This happens in almost all
asian
countries
, from East Asia, South Asia, or even the Middle East. These
culture
applies
for
almost all
asian
countries
, although they
don't
know
each other's
language
. Indonesia and Japan have the same 'take-off shoes'
culture
, but there are just a small number of Indonesian
people
that
speaks
Japanese. Another personal example is, I like
arabics
or the Middle eastern traditional music, but I
don't
speak
arabic
. This fact also supported that nowadays, technology helps us to
know
more
informations
easily. Decades ago, before the internet established,
people
who
want
to
know
about the
culture
of a
country
have
to search
it
on
book
. However, the book written in the local
language
. Therefore,
people
have to
know
the
language
in order to
know
the information. On the contrary, in this globalization era, we can get the information from the internet, including other
country
's
culture
. Even if we
don't
speak
the
language
, we can translate it to our native
language
.
Nevertheless,
people
who are
undestand
the
language
are usually learning about the
culture
as well. Therefore,
peoples
who
speak
Japanese are usually
know
about Japanese
culture
. But, this is not
mandatory
requirement to
understand
the
language
first before
knowing
the
culture
. Imagine that
people
who want to
know
Chinese
culture
,
isn't
it
hard
to
speak
the Mandarin first?
To conclude,
speak
the
language
of a
country
have
an advantage to
understand
better about the
culture
. But, I believe that
undestanding
the
culture
doesn't
need to
speak
the
language
.
