Thesis Statement
Children
are generally more successful in studying a foreign language
than adults
do. Therefore, some say it is better to learn
languages
during childhood. I agree that children
does pick up languages
much faster
than adults
, and this has its reasons. Though, to limit oneself to learn
languages
jsut
because one deemed that they are
too late to do so, is something that I disagree on. Children
picks
up languages
faster
than adults
do because their brains
are still in the stage of development, where the brain
tend
to absorb everything (including foreign languages
) fast
. Of course, this means that learning
a new language
in your childhood does give you some big advantages. You could learn
faster
, and usually
more holistically than adults
do. This results in the new language
to be
ingrained in the brain
, and gave
you natural control over the language
. In contrast, adults
usually
learn
languages
more methodically. They would deliberately study the language
. This method of learning can result in the language
not fully acquired. Lots of language
learners I knew who learn
this way usually
translate each sentences
in their brain
from their mother tongue instead of producing naturaly
. This made them think that learning
a language
is hard.Though
learning
a language
in adulthood may need more time and effort than in childhood, this, I think
should not be something to deter your goal by. There are ways to acquire a language
that will be most close to the way a child
learn
. This method usually
comprises of
two main things, namely input and output. Instead of going into language
classes and learn
by rote memorization, you could just focus on consuming comprehensible input from the language
you are trying to learn
. This method hopes to build natural feeling of the language
by introducing the language
pattern to the brain
through language
input. Then, you could practice to 'output' the language
, by producing something in that language
(speaking or writing).In conclusion,
adults
could still learn
a language
as good as children
do
given that they use the right strategies to do that.
